Anxiety
If you are struggling with anxiety you are not alone! Anxiety Symptoms differ from person to person; however, some of the more common symptoms may include: persistent fear (sometimes without any obvious cause that is present every day), inability to concentrate or focus, muscle tension and muscle aches, diarrhea or digestive issues, eating too little or too much, insomnia, irritability, mood swings, and/or low libido.
I pull from many different therapy modalities to best suit your needs. There are many effective strategies and techniques available for us to try together including mindfulness strategies, relaxation techniques, reframing situations, thought tracking, and setting goals. As your tolerance or capacity for anxiety increases so does your ability to handle stress. If anxiety is interfering with your day-to-day living, work and/ or social life you may benefit from counselling. Together we can explore techniques that will enable you to live a happier, healthier more fulfilling life.
Depression
Depression has MANY FACES – Depression isn’t just extreme sadness, grief, and/or suicidal thoughts or actions. It can also be being emotionally distant, faking a smile, social isolation, skipping work to sleep, cracking jokes to avoid feeling one’s own pain “class clown”, overeating or undereating or not eating at all, not able to shower or maintain heathy hygiene habits, and/or unable to get out of bed.
Depression can originate from challenging or overwhelming events or it can just be a general feeling that you can’t seem to shake. Symptoms of Depression may include sadness, low self-esteem, hopelessness, helplessness, worthlessness, loss of appetite, difficulty sleeping, exhaustion and/or fatigue. If Depression is interfering with your day-to-day living, work and/ or social life you may benefit from counselling. Together we will start the process of healing so you can start living a happier, healthier, more fulfilling life!
Grief
The most common feelings of grief are usually due to the death of a loved one. However, there are other life events such as the end of a relationship or change in relationship, the loss of a job, the loss of a pet, or a relocation to a new home can also lead to feelings of grief.
There are different stages to grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. Grief is NOT a linear experience! Grief differs depending on who we are, whom or what we have lost, and how much our day-to-day life is altered by the loss. Grief is a very unique and private experience and there is no right or wrong way to grieve. Each person’s grieving process will vary.
Together we will look at how your life has been impacted by the loss, explore emotions, discuss healthy coping skills, and find strategies to help you manage your grief. Sometimes friends and family don’t know how to support you while you’re grieving, this is why counselling is so valuable during times of transition, loss, change and/or grief.
Trauma
Traumatic events can happen to anyone, at any age, at any time. Trauma is an extremely subjective experience. What may be very traumatic for one person, may not phase another person but that does NOT take away from your experience(s). Trauma can begin as acute stress from a perceived life-threat or as the end result of cumulative stresses. Both types of stress can seriously impair a person’s ability to function with resilience and ease. The positive news is, trauma symptoms are treatable.
You might be thinking – What is Trauma? Trauma may result from a wide variety of stressors some major types of trauma are: Childhood abuse, accidents, war, natural disasters, mass interpersonal violence, fires and burns, invasive medical procedures, life-threatening medical conditions, emotional abuse and/or neglect, sexual and/or physical assault, loss, traumatic birth, suicide, and/ or the corrosive stressors of ongoing fear and conflict. If you have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event you may be struggling with symptoms such as: nightmares, intrusive thoughts or flashbacks; avoiding thoughts, feelings, people, and places associated with the trauma; persistent negative thoughts and moods; sleep disturbance; and an increase in irritability and anger. These are all normal responses to abnormal event(s). Healing from these experiences is possible! Counselling can help reduce trauma symptoms and restore balance to your life.
There are many different treatments and it’s important to find the one that works best for you. My knowledge and training allows me to use a variety of different therapies, techniques, and resources to tailor a treatment plan for your experience. I would be honoured to support you in healing from the experience(s) that’s been preventing you from living the full life that you want to live.
Initial Session
For the initial session, it is recommended that we book an additional 30 minutes to allow adequate time for the full session as well as to spend as much time that is needed to address any questions or concerns around the consent and confidentiality agreement. Clients are informed of the parameters of confidentiality in the initial intake session. Counselling is private and confidential and all regulatory standards around confidentiality are strictly adhered to and complied with.
Individual Counselling Session
Individual Counselling can be for anyone who is going through a life transition, struggle, or challenge. It can be for someone struggling to make a decision or someone who is dealing with anxiety or depression. It can be someone who is grieving a loss. It can be for someone who has had debilitating life experiences. Counselling can be utilized when making life decisions or for anyone feeling uncertain, helpless, or powerless. Individuals seek counselling for multiple reasons – goals and length of counselling will be decided in the sessions. As a counsellor, I respect and value the courage that it takes to seek counselling.
Couples Counselling Session
Couples often seek counselling when the relationship is under stress -including infidelity, financial struggles, communication, parenting, or intimacy related issues. Some couples may be coming in for pre-marital counselling or just needing a slight change in their relationship. Goals and objectives of counselling will be determined by the couple in the therapy session. Although the relationship is the therapeutic focus, individual counselling may be required.
Family/Parent Counselling Session (2 people)
Family or Parent Counselling session can be for parents trying to effectively co-parent, parent-child relationships, sibling relationships, friendships, or any other family-like relationship that is experiencing strain. Goals and objectives of counselling will be determined by the two people in the therapy session. Although the relationship is the therapeutic focus, individual counselling may be required.
Family Counselling Session (3+ people)
Family Counselling can involve the whole family or some members of a family. Three or more people attending counselling is considered a family counselling session. Families have many different dynamics and experiences which makes families a complex unit so each family’s needs and goals will be determined together as a group. Family Counselling can help with several issues including communication, expectations, boundaries, conflict management, and parenting. Depending on family situation, we will work together to set family goals or in some situations, I may need to work individually with each member to identify common goals so that we have something to work towards and achieve. I will provide your family support as we work towards the goals that we set.
Group Workshops, Team Building, or Training Sessions
Group workshops, team building, or training sessions can be scheduled on an as needed basis. They can include weekly groups or all-day training session depending on the service. Please check out “Other Services” for more information.
